Lay of the Land
Monte Sereno is a sleepy residential neighborhood spread out over approximately 1.56 square miles. Like many of the other smaller communities in Silicon Valley, Monte Sereno has become a popular housing location for local technology executives and their families. As such, the median household income is $183,000 while the average median home price in the area is well over $1,000,000.
Monte Sereno has very little need for dedicated transportation services as a result of its relatively small size and lack of commerce. As such residents usually rely on State Route 9 which runs through the center of town when it comes to traveling by car into or out of the city. However, the residents do benefit from the extensive work done by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). The VTA has worked to create an extensive system of light rail and commuter bus lines in order to better connect the citizens of the Santa Clara Valley to each other and to the rest of California. Terminals are located all over the area offering easy access to the residents of Monte Sereno.
Monte Sereno has no retail, commercial or industrial services of any kind operating within city limits. Extremely strict zoning laws and general efforts by the residents have ensured that it has remained solely for residential purposes since its incorporation during the 1950’s. There are no parks, no post offices, no police, no schools, and no library located within the town of Monte Sereno.
Instead of operating these services themselves, the residents of Monte Sereno instead contribute per capita funding for each of these services to the town of Los Gatos and the city of Saratoga. The two locations then provide police and fire services to the vicinity as well as offering access to community projects and locations free of charge. This not only includes free access to parks and outdoors locations, but resident level participation in the youth and community programs available in Saratoga and Los Gatos.
Additionally, residents of Monte Sereno are free to participate in the Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation 55-Plus Program. This program is designed primarily to assist senior members of the community in maintaining a healthy activity level. The program provides assistance for arts and crafts workshops, hobby and game programs, movies, various day trips, and a wide range of exercise programs. This includes full access to the adult recreation center located in Los Gatos.
Residents of Monte Sereno have several options when it comes to their children\’s educational paths. Children can attend the Los Gatos Union Elementary School District or the Saratoga Elementary school district for all grades before high school. Once their children reach high school age, they have the option of sending them to the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District. However, a small portion of the town is also served by the Campbell Union Elementary and Campbell Union High School Districts.
As an incorporated city, Monte Sereno operates under the city council/operator form of government. This combines the efforts of politically elected city council which makes determinations regards major issues with an appointed local government administrator who focuses on the daily operations of the city.
